Let me begin by saying that I enjoyed reading this book. I found the content of value and judgements sound. I was not that comfortable with the style of writing, which is of course purely subjective but I found the sentences sometimes reduced to very short phrases without a verb, kind of "reduced instruction set writing". I appreciate the need for brevity but this was almost too much sometimes.I was however a little surprised by the lack of depth regarding the Siebel application itself. Although the title blurb suggests "comprehensive discussion on the main components" (sic) I found detail to be thin on the ground. But I should state again that this could be my own misinterpretation of what the book sets out to do. I still enjoyed it and reading it, learned a lot. I have been in and around Siebel for a long time and this was an excellent summary.

A Guide to Implementing Oracle Siebel CRM 8x Mr Vivek Kale 9780070680074 Books Reviews
A Guide to Implementing Oracle Siebel CRM 8.x is lot more than about implementing Siebel! It is a rich treatise on Customer Relationship Management that blends business and technology concepts. Of great interest are Kale's own ideas such as `information is relationship'; `management by collaboration', and `survival and success of enterprises based on the theory of natural selection from Biosciences'

'In his new book, A Guide to Implementing Oracle Siebel CRM 8.x, Vivek Kale successfully bridges the gap between technology and business by exhibiting a remarkable conceptual grasp of both. His book is not merely about implementing a computer application but shows how Siebel software can be used to enable any degree of customer responsiveness a firm desires. Kale describes how the software can be used to manage relationships with customers in traditional product-oriented firms. He includes a variety of implementation strategies which can be used depending upon the business's resources, the size of the supply chain network, and the customer base. He does not give just a list of rules-of-thumb but explains the principles underlying each of the options. After reading this book, the reader should have a clearer understanding of the business and technology options available in Siebel software to achieve the business goals within the available budget.
Who should read this book? Managers who seek to understand the maze of computer concepts and how technology can be used to enable their business to be what they envision; technologists who want to become more familiar with business strategy and better understand what technology needs to accomplish; entrepreneurs who want to develop more competitive business organizations and learn about strategies to make their vision a reality - all can benefit from this book. Most importantly, the astute reader will realize that many computer concepts such as networking, modularity, integration of components, and network economics are also applicable in developing new business strategies. The same concepts used in organizing computer applications can be used in organizing supply chains. For this reason, academics should view this book as a blueprint for future business practices. Kale has accomplished the task of making technology and business strategies seem simple and logical. The book is a must read!

Author's Note
Wanted to clarify what my book is NOT; it is not a book on Siebel product per se, for which Oracle Corp. has scores of detailed reference and user manuals. My book is clearly focused on the implementation aspects of Oracle Siebel CRM.
My motivation for writing the CRM book was the inherent importance of customer-facing applications that are of critical importance for the success of businesses the world-over. Finally it is the cutomers and their custom that drives the economy.
With ERP implementations reaching a critical mass across thousands of companies across the world, it is expected that that CRMs should be the next priority on the CIOs strategic agenda. However, the lack of momentum is a bit dissapointing (when compared with that of ERP implementations earlier; would welcome comments on vic_kale@hotmail.com).
Unlike for ERPs, there aren't too many books on CRM on the market. My book provides a bridge between the business and technological aspects of implementing CRM in organizations. It provides a sound introduction to CRM programs and systems, and, then focuses on aspects of implementing Oracle's Siebel CRM, including a description of what it is and the tools and techniques that are essential for an effective CRM implementation.
I was with Vivek from the very nascent stages of this book and I know how much hard work went into it as he negotiated with Siebel--before the Oracle acquisition, and then after. The result is a thorough and experience-based book that transcends the product view and includes some bona-fide CRM best practices. Sections on Preparing a Business Case for CRM, Initiating the Siebel Project, and Valuing the Relationship Based Enterprise will be a bonus for developers, product specialists, business executives, and project managers in need of tips and techniques for successful Siebel delivery.
A Guide to Implementing Oracle Siebel CRM 8.x is a great reference if you're involved as a manager or stakeholder on a Oracle CRM implementation. But it's required reading if you're on the development team.
