My Wholly Heartbreaking Heretic Danielle Peterson 9781300419457 Books Reviews
This is the second volume in the Duck and Doe novella series. Volume 1, Our Blissful Bayou Beginnings, shows how their relationship began and how they became immortal. Written from Remi's point of view in the style of a memoir, this series is funny, sweet, heartbreaking, and shocking. It explores the question what if you really had an eternity to spend with someone? These two have and on-again, off-again love/hate relationship spanning centuries. A love story, but not a romance. Volume two continues their story with events that occurred in the 1970's. An entertaining read.
*I received a copy for my honest review.
I have to say that I love these Novella's from Danielle. She has such a way of writing that draws you in and makes you want to keep reading until the end. This Novella is short but it is packed with so many descriptions and the era that it is from is a very fun era. Remi oh man Remi I just love him to pieces and I can't get enough of him. He wears his heart on his sleeve and will do anything for Bichette.
What would you do for love? What would you do to preserve the memory of love? This is a story that will uncover love at the rawest point in a persons life. Come along and see what has Bichette fretting and sending Bichette to find Remi to retrieve something that is very important to her.
Remi has started a new life living as a tradesman in Arizona. His life quiet and simple that is until Bichette shows up and asks him to find something for her. At first Remi is not sure he wants to do it but Remi will do anything for Bichette. Once he starts his quest searching for the thing that Bichette wants Remi soon finds out that he is searching for something very private and close to Bichette. Once Remi finds it he brings it back to Remi and they sit down and Remi asks her to explain why she needed what she needed. When Remi hears why Bichette wanted what she wanted he is humbled because he never would have thought about Bichette in that light.
Rémi and Bichette are back in `My Wholly Heartbreaking Heretic', a follow-up story to `Our Blissful Bayou Beginnings'. They find themselves now in the 1970s, a tumultuous time of upheaval and spiritual exploration. Bichette has entrenched herself in the movement by taking followers and appearing to be a deity. Rémi is more than happy being a television repairman, but Bichette has a way of calling him back to her side he can't ignore. She sends him on an errand to right a wrong perpetrated against her and he finds himself wrapped up in another one of her obsessions.
`My Wholly Heartbreaking Heretic' is the second part of Rémi's continuing journal of the life he and Bichette lead. It never ceases to amaze me how easily Rémi gets caught up in Bichette's schemes, but considering all they've gone through and how it's his `fault' they're now immortal, it's easier to understand. Rémi's colorful and amusing viewpoint brings the story to life and I find myself more sympathetic to him rather than Bichette. It seems Bichette has always been more cunning and manipulative than Rémi ever could be, in any era. A little longer than the first book, `My Wholly Heartbreaking Heretic', is just as intriguing and entertaining. I'd be interested in seeing where life and circumstances take Rémi and Bichette next...
The Duck and The Doe Our Blissful Bayou Beginnings (1), My Wholly Heartbreaking Heretic (2)
Peterson has managed to maintain the story's appeal and still not really answer the key question in the series can one love too much or for too long. Again Remà is the main focus of this story; his narration provides the major point of view for the story and has maintained the sense of humor and touch of ramble that is so familiar from the first book.
Fast forward another 150 years or so, and Remà is living in Arizona still in love with his Bichette, but time has proven that they are not meant to exist in close proximity. While not really idealizing Bichette, her behavior or the changes his acts in book one have wrought upon her, Remà does manage to provide a reasonably balanced narration as the story unfolds and he is again embroiled in a mystery with Bichette.
This was a quick reading novella, that further defines the behavior of Bichette, and places Remà in the conflicted position of desiring that which is dangerous to him, and possibly others. While he is clever enough to see the inherent issues in re-engaging contact with Bichette, his guilt over their vampiric state prods him to act. Beautifully written and engaging, this is a sweet story that manages to combine historical context, obsession, and guilt into the ongoing story of the Duck and the Doe.
I received an eBook copy from the author for purpose of honest review for the Jeep Diva. I was not compensated for this review all conclusions are my own responsibility.
