Hit the lights and jump in the fire, you're about to enter the School of Rock! Today's lecture will be a crash course in brain surgery. This hard and fast lesson is taught by instructors who graduated from the old school...they actually paid $5.98 for The $5.98 EP. But back before these philosophy professors cut their hair, they were lieutenants in the Metal Militia.

  • A provocative study of the thinking mans metal band, this book

  • Maps out the connections between Aristotle, Nietzsche, Marx, Kierkegaard, and Metallica, to demonstrate the bands philosophical significance
  • Uses themes in Metallicas work to illuminate topics such as freedom, truth, identity, existentialism, questions of life and death, metaphysics, epistemology, the mind-body problem, morality, justice, and what we owe one another
  • Draws on Metallicas lyrical content, Lars Ulrichs relationship with Napster, as well as the documentary Some Kind of Monster
  • Serves as a guide for thinking through the work of one of the greatest rock bands of all time

I got this as a birthday present for my boyfriend as he has been wanting to read this book for a while and he doesn't read very many books, not to mention it's by Metallica and they are one of his favorite bands. I can happily say that he read it within a few days and keeps reading bits of it every so often and fully enjoyed it. I'm glad that I made the purchase.

Metallica and Philosophy A Crash Course in Brain Surgery (Audible Audio Edition) William Irwin Jeff Preston Audible Studios Books Reviews

If you are a Metallica fan, and you like to think about things, you will like this book. It contains very thought provoking material about most of Metallica's work and personal lives. Some of it requires very deep thinking.
Very insightful. It sheds a brand new light on the lyrics and the inspirations for Metallica's songs. The book elevates the band to a truly iconic status.
This is kind of a cool idea. Take a current topic and apply philosophy to it. So you've got essays on the death penalty (Ride the Lightning), assisted suicide/euthanasia (One), intellectual property rights (the Napster lawsuit), etc... It did seem a little repetitive at times and sometimes the subject only seemed tentatively connected to the band. Most of the writers did seem to be genuine fans of the band so that was cool.

I've been a huge fan since just about the start of the whole Metalica thing and I still like their stuff (especially St. Anger). They may be one of the last "big" bands and that's kind of sad, but I'm glad they made it.
Interesting book and good point of views.
Good to know about the histories beyond the God of Metals.
You should read it listening all the songs.
Book I needed for class, but explains things clearly and succintly
I've always considered Metallica to be a "thinking person's" band. Yes, the power of the music is a cut above, but the lyrics go deeper than do those of most other groups. This book reinforces that belief. It is intelligently written by experts in the field who are obviously Metallica fans. The entire concept of relating philosophy to popular culture is great. Plan on reading others as well, and would like to see books on Rush and Pink Floyd & Philosophy.
Most essays are excellent. Presenting in a reasonable fashion, concepts very obscure for the layman. I am somewhat aquainted with philosophy, but still learned the perspectives and concepts of some philosophers unknown or partially known to me. Objectively, 80 percent of the lyrics (which is what would be most relevant for a philosophical analysis) of Metallica are rich for philosophical illustration and debate, even as support to contradict ideas. The only thing I disliked about the books is the unacceptable ignorance of Metallica and Its lyrics, in a couple of essays. In example, The essay by Thomas Nys of Nonconformity. States very firmly and displaying ignorance of the body of work of the band, dismisses their work after the Black Album. The position of other disgruntled fans of the band, that cannot accept evolution and fear change. The Black Album presented to the world songs like "The Unforgiven" and "Wherever I may Roam", "Nothing Else Matters" and others, which are rich in deep and clever extensialist matters. Probably the heaviest and smartest lyrics ever written for popular music. Furthermore, as other authors noted Hetfield lyrics evolved and improved as they became more introspective. The music suffered with the Load albums and St. Anger, BUT NOT THE LYRICS AND MORE IMPORTANT, THEIR PHYLOSOPHICAL SIGNIFICANCE.
