As America is thrust into war after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, two young Americans find their lives instantly and dramatically changed. Jackson becomes a first hand witness to the dawning of the war on a Sunday morning in Hawaii which begins like any other. For Michi and her family, the war begins in California, at their family grocery store. Through no choice of their own, both teens find themselves relocated to a rural corner of the Arkansas Delta—far from anything that feels remotely safe or familiar.
Though both are grandchildren of immigrants, life is profoundly different for Jackson and Michi due to the ancestry of their grandparents. Jackson lives on a farm on the outskirts of town and instantly wins over the local boys with his tales of Pearl Harbor and the “Japs”. Michi lives behind barbed wire in the Rohwer Relocation Center with thousands of other Americans relocated there by the government.
As the war drags on, Jackson struggles to let go of the hate that grips him while Michi tries to makes sense of her feelings of betrayal at being considered disloyal to the country she has always been proud of. When circumstances bring the two together, they each discover that during times of war the lines between friends and enemies can be hard to define, as they find themselves at the crossroads of loss and love.

I was in a book club discussion with the author and I have never enjoyed a book club so much. This book is very well researched, it would make a good book for middle school on up. The violence is due to the attack on Pearl Harbor in the opening chapter. The injustice of the internment of people of Japanese descent and the prejudices of the people of Arkansas is balanced with the real fears of Americans at the time. Jackson's conflicted feelings, the feelings of the Japanese who were unjustly interned, the feelings of the townspeople, all these are sorted through. This book told me much about the era I did not know.Product details

Go Forward with Courage eBook Melissa Miles Reviews
Love, LOVE this book! Melissa Miles' newest release grabs your attention from the beginning…a great read! Miles takes the reader on an adventure, back in the day of World War II, and enables the reader to experience what life was like then. Americans and Japanese Americans alike held strong emotions, and Miles expertly brings those emotions to life…..and the reader feels like he/she is right there with them! Another winner from this talented author!
Ms. Miles weaves a good story of young love layered over US internment of it's Japanese citizens. This is an important topic and historical fiction that keeps the readers attention from the get-go. My familiarity of Japanese internment comes from events and those camps in the West, so I appreciate this well researched perspective from a different part of the country. This is excellent material for middle school classroom discussion as it touches on such raw war time emotional conflict, coming of age, adolescent bullying, and first love.
Good book. Sweet story.
I enjoyed this book.
Great book, well written and thought out. Even though it takes place in WW2 it is very timely fot todays issues. Shoiuld be a must read you all teenagers.
This storyline is amazingly relevant in today's world, as we are experiencing a resurgence of hate and prejudice. This beautifully constructed love story takes us back to WWII and the Japanese internment camp, and teaches us all that open minds and hearts can overcome all. Beautifully written!
It was a very good novel with an historical base. I learned a lot about the Japanese internment camps. It would also be a wonderful book for young adult literature as it is from the perspective of an adolescent boy living in those time. I appreciate that it was NOT full of gratuitous sex, violence and foul language.
