It is the summer of 1969 and the Vietnam War is raging, John Wayne dominates the theater marquee, and fourteen year old Billy Ward’s world will crumble if he can’t convince his eighteen year old brother Mike and Mike’s best friend Stu to include him in a backpacking adventure. For the older boys, taking The Kid into the mountains is a burden to be avoided at all costs. Parental pressure finally forces them to offer Billy a test to see if he is worthy. Can Billy prove himself physically capable? And beyond that, how can he hope to earn the respect of the older boys?
Brothers of Summer is a window into the hearts of teenagers in the 60’s—a time when kids rode bikes, boys got drafted, parental abuse was often ignored, and the bonds of friendship between teenagers were more important than nearly anything imaginable.

First, the positives. Stan writes clearly, and his descriptions of the area are wonderful. It's a lovely area, and his prose reflects this. The book has an intriguing assortment of characters, and Stan made me want to learn more about them. The big negative was the plot. It was not well thought through. The story of the older boy, his mother, and the money (trying to avoid spoilers here) would have been interesting had it added anything to the overall story. Alas, it did not. The "big event" was abrupt, and far too little time was spent showing its effect on Billy's life. Instead, there was a jump to an unexplained ending. "And that's why he became a doctor." Really? How did the event cause him to become a doctor? We'll never know.
*****************SPOILER ALERT!*****************SPOILER ALERT!*****************SPOILER ALERT!*****************
Here is my plot summary, to illustrate the points I'm making. Billy badly wants to go on a camping trip with his older brother and his brother's good friend. Good friend has a horrible mother and a fairly lousy life, but has managed to earn money so that he can start life on his own. He stashes it away while he goes on the hike with Billy (who got his way!) and Billy's brother.
While they're gone, Good Friend's mother decides to move out of town (without taking or telling her son), and in cleaning out the house, finds the money. She takes it for herself, but her sister finds it and steals it. Mom moves. This is the last we hear of Mom. Or her sister. Or the money. Or this entire mini plot.
Meanwhile, out on the trail, Good Friend has a freak accident and dies. End of camping trip. Fast forward to some years later, and in a short chapter, you learn that Billy is becoming a doctor because of the tragic death. No real explanation. No discussion of the impact of the event on Billy or his family.
The author badly needed to decide what would be the major plot, then develop it and ruthlessly prune those things that did not contribute to plot development. The books holds the possibility of several fine stories, but in the end, it is deeply disappointing.

Brothers of Summer eBook Stan Morse Reviews
Fun read set in 1950s / 60s Chelan. Best part was no fake murder. Good clean growing up in small town USA and sibling relationships.
Stan' s book captures not only sibling and best friend relationships, but family dynamics in general. All this leads the reader into many life changing experiences and adventures. The suspense continues through the last event. I look forward to his next book coming out soon.
What a charming book. It was interesting to go through the brothers' misunderstandings and get into the head of a teenage boy dealing with them. It showed both the good and bad sides of the human condition. In that sense it was more than a trek in the wilderness. I loved it.
This is a very entertaining story. I live in the Chelan area and am familiar with the area described. He gives great descriptions of this beautiful area. The author has good character development with some great plot twists,
I am a fan of Stan! His first book about Circling the Earth in a wheelchair inspired me and my family to take my mother on a Mediterranean trip with a traveling wheelchair for her to enjoy the sights from the Vatican to the beaches of Morocco... this book brought me to tears several times as my two sons are coming of age and I so wish for them both to experience such epic insights as the three young men who are the main characters in this touching story!
Being from Chelan and living there during that time I enjoyed it very much. Hope he writs anothe book.well writen and very descript of the city and the surrounding area.
This book will appeal to everyone who has ever lived in a small town or remembers being a teenager at the end of the sixties.
